The Realm Ethereal is a concept where I am merging my two artistic passions: comic books and fantasy art. I’ve been drawing since I was 9 or 10 years old. Much of that was as a result of me buying and reading comic books since that early age.
I discovered fantasy art sometime around 1998. To me, the fantasy art genre seemed to be a way to both escape comic books yet remain related to them some way. Every painting and drawing in The Realm Ethereal is conceived, sketched, and painted with these passions in mind.
The Realm Ethereal is a concept partially describing the state in which I find myself more and more interested in when it comes to creating my personal art. By “personal art”, I am referring to drawings, paintings or any art related project wherein it is my own vision. Essentially, that state has to do with my creating and owning my own art.
I’ve been drawing with some form of intent probably since I was about 9 or 10 years old. This is due to having discovered comic books at that age. Using comic books as the spring board to draw when I was a kid is the reason I draw and paint today. I still have the comic books I made from when I was a child. I’ve discovered for myself, that even having worked freelance projects, I am always going to be working on my own art projects. It’s no secret, in between freelance work I do fill my time with my own art projects. After all, that’s what I have been doing since I was 9 or 10 years old.
I think what I like most about the concept of The Realm Ethereal is it exists in my mind’s eye and so I get to form, shape, draw, tear down, reshape, redraw to my heart’s content. In this sense, being “ethereal” to me means focusing on ideas only I can define because they exist as an extension of my inner creativity. It’s a place that is beyond anyone’s ability to look into. No one can really see into my mind or heart other than myself. The thrill of it all is of course coming up with the ideas that will see the light of day. Sharing these ideas with others allows me to keep making more of it.
The Realm Ethereal reflects my desire to make art without restrictions. The art, character and stories are all my own. It all flows from an ethereal realm that physically exists somewhere in the space between my ears. It’s my job to bring it to the world, put it out there, and see what the results are. ■
