When it comes to comic book art, attention to detail is paramount. The CrowQuill Pen by Ink Gang Boss in Procreate has become my trusty companion in achieving the intricate linework and captivating expressions that bring my characters to life. With its customizable brushes and pressure sensitivity, the CrowQuill Pen offers a level of precision that is unparalleled.

Whether I’m outlining the contours of a superhero’s chiseled features or delicately rendering the emotions in a character’s eyes, the CrowQuill Pen allows me to effortlessly capture every nuance, adding depth and personality to my illustrations. The Technical Pen

Sure, lots of Procreate ink brushes can make a straight line, but with the Technical Pen, I can achieve precise lines and detailed artwork with ease. Whether I’m  drawing intricate character designs or crafting dynamic comic panels, this tool provides the flexibility and control I need. I find this pen to be really good for inking my comic book panel borders.

One of the standout features of the Technical Pen is its ability to mimic traditional inked linework. The pen’s pressure sensitivity captures the nuances of your hand movements, resulting in organic and expressive lines, yet are uniform in thickness. I liken the Technical Pen in Procreate to the Rapidograph drafting pens I used to use way back in the day. The Technical Pen is one of the default ink brushes in Procreate.

Ink Bleed Pen

With its realistic ink bleeding effect, this powerful tool opens up a world of possibilities for artists. When needed, the Ink Bleed Pen add depth, texture, and drama to my comic panels. It’s not my main inking pen, but it has its place.

One of the standout features of the Ink Bleed Pen is its ability to mimic the look of traditional ink on paper. With every stroke, the ink bleeds and spreads, creating a visually captivating effect that is hard to achieve digitally. I find this pen is perfect for creating expressive lines, shading, and adding richness in my comics. With its versatile pressure sensitivity, I can achieve thick and bold lines or delicate and fine details with ease, all while having a gritty edge to the linework. The Ink Bleed Pen is one of the default ink brushes in Procreate.

Gesinski Ink

Another one of my favorite Procreate ink brushes is called “Gesinski Ink,” which has quickly become one of my favorite brushes for creating comic book illustrations. What captivates me about this brush is its remarkable ability to mimic the transparency and texture of traditional India ink, allowing me to build up forms and create dark areas that evoke a sense of depth and authenticity in my artwork.

Why I Choose To Ink My Comics In Procreate

Aside from the speed factor, drawing within Procreate eliminates the hassle of scanning and digitizing physical artwork. This not only saves me time but also ensures a higher level of quality and fidelity in my final illustrations. Each stroke and detail is captured directly on the iPad, preserving the clarity and vibrancy of your artwork without any loss of resolution or color accuracy.

Furthermore, Procreate offers an extensive array of digital brushes, textures, and effects that can enhance my artwork and bring it to life in ways that traditional mediums cannot. From realistic pencil and ink brushes to dynamic gradients and lighting effects, Procreate provides an entire digital toolbox at my fingertips. This wide range of digital tools not only expands my artistic capabilities but also enables you to explore different styles and techniques with ease.

In the past, to create special effects with ink on paper, there were several tools needed. Tools like special opaque white ink and zip-a-tone, to razor blades for scraping into the ink and toothbrushes for splattering ink onto the paper are common working analog (traditionally.)

But with digital, all of those types of effects (and more) are easily available and don’t cost any more or take up any physical space. Let’s hear it for de-cluttering artist’s studios of unused art supplies. I know I have way more paints, brushes, pens, and paper than I actually use. For me, going all-in with digital using Procreate ink brushes is one way to curb those excess art supplies while motivating me to get right to the art making.◼️
